Shopify accessibility checker
This free check scans your Shopify store the way a keyboard or screen reader user meets it. You get every finding on the theme, product pages, collections and cart, the page it is on, and the change that fixes it.
What the check covers on a Shopify store
- Your theme as shoppers get it: the header and menu, the cart drawer, product media, variant pickers, filters and the footer, checked with the axe-core engine against WCAG 2.2 AA.
- The pages a shopper uses, found from your sitemap: home, collections, products, cart and your content pages, on desktop and phone layouts.
- Product images without a description, faint text, buttons and links with no name, form fields with no label, and things a keyboard cannot reach.
- Code that the apps you install add to the page, flagged as third party so you know which vendor to ask.

- Shopify’s checkout is Shopify’s responsibility and has been audited against WCAG 2.1 AA. Your theme, product pages, collections, images, the apps you install and your content are yours, and they are what demand letters cite.
- In March 2026, half of the website accessibility suits that named a platform named a Shopify store (EcomBack). Most defendants are small and mid-sized stores.
- Sites running an accessibility overlay widget were named in about 23 % of March 2026 suits. A widget sits on top of the page; the theme code underneath stays the same.
What you get
- Findings grouped by cause, so one faint footer link repeated on every page is one row and one change.
- A PDF report with the element and page for each finding, for you, a developer or an agency.
- In the app: supported fixes written into your theme once you approve each one, the original file saved first, and the page checked again afterwards. The free plan includes 3 scans a month and 3 fixes every 30 days, no card.
Frequently asked questions
- Shopify’s free themes are built with accessibility in mind, but a store changes them: colour choices, added sections, product images without descriptions and the apps you install. The check measures your store as it is today, not the theme demo.
- Only after you approve a fix. The original file is saved before anything is written, the page is checked again afterwards, and any fix can be undone from the app.
- Not from this page. Installed in your store, the app scans a password-protected pre-launch store with the password you save in the app.
- Whether your store meets the ADA. No automated tool can say that, and this is not legal advice. Some WCAG criteria need a person, such as whether an image description says what matters; the report marks those for review.
