Missing and Duplicate Meta Descriptions on Shopify: How to Fix Them

A Shopify meta description goes missing or repeats for two reasons: the item has no search listing description of its own, so Shopify falls back to the start of its description, or many descriptions open with the same text. Google says identical or similar descriptions on every page are not helpful, and encourages generating them for large catalogs. AccessComply flags a missing description, or one outside 50 to 160 characters, on every page it scans, and after you approve it writes one for products, collections and pages from their own text. It does not compare pages with each other, so duplicates are found with a product export.

Why a unique meta description matters to Google

Google builds most search snippets from the page itself, and it uses the meta description when that describes the page better. Its guidance on snippets and meta descriptions is direct: identical or similar descriptions on every page of a site are not helpful when those pages appear in search results. The same page accepts that a large, database driven store cannot hand write every one, and says programmatic generation of descriptions can be appropriate and is encouraged there.

So the goal is not a perfect sentence on every product. It is a description per page that says what that page is, in words a shopper would recognise, without the same text repeated across the catalog.

Where a Shopify meta description comes from

Every product, collection and page in the Shopify admin has a Search engine listing section with a page title and a description. Shopify recommends keeping the description to about 160 characters. The product CSV file carries the same field as SEO description, which accepts up to 320 characters, and Shopify’s CSV guide states what happens when it is blank: the product description is used instead.

That fallback explains most of what a scan finds on a Shopify store:

What you see in searchThe usual cause
No description, or a snippet Google picked from the pageThe item has no search listing description and no description text either
A description cut off mid sentenceThe fallback took a long product description; search engines shorten anything past the space they show
The same opening on dozens of productsDescriptions that start with the same shipping note, size chart line or brand paragraph
A description that only repeats the product nameA very short description, such as a single line under a photo

What the scan flags on each page

The scan reads the description tag each page actually serves, the way a search engine does, and reports two findings:

FindingWhat fails it
Missing meta descriptionNo description tag, or an empty one
Meta description lengthShorter than 50 characters, or longer than 160

Each finding names the page and the text it saw. The scan judges one page at a time; it does not compare one product’s description with another’s, so a description repeated across forty products passes as long as its length is fine. That part is yours to check, and the export below makes it quick.

What the app writes after you approve

For a product, a collection or a page with a missing or badly sized description, AccessComply writes a new one after you approve the fix:

  • From the item’s own text. It takes the item’s description and cuts it at a word, within 160 characters. When that text is shorter than 50 characters, it puts the item’s name in front of it.
  • Never invented. When no description between 50 and 160 characters can be made from the item’s own words, it writes nothing, and the finding stays on your list.
  • In Shopify’s own fields. It writes the search listing description on products and collections, and the description tag Shopify keeps for a page, the same fields you would edit in the admin.
  • Only if it is still wrong. Just before writing, it reads the current value again, and skips an item you or another app have fixed since the scan.
  • With the old value kept. The previous value is saved first, so the change can be undone, and the live page is checked again afterwards.

The home page, the blog index and policy pages are not written: the home page’s description lives in Shopify’s Online Store preferences, and the finding says so. On Starter at $29 a month these fixes have no limit; the Free plan covers 3 fixes every 30 days.

How to find duplicate descriptions across a whole catalog

The fastest check uses Shopify’s own export:

  1. In the Shopify admin, open Products and export all products as a CSV file.
  2. Open the file in a spreadsheet and look at the SEO description column.
  3. Blank cells use the product description instead, so for those rows look at the first 160 characters of the description.
  4. Sort by that text. Repeated openings stand out at once, and so do descriptions that are only a product name.

Then fix the worst first: best sellers, and every product whose description starts with the same boilerplate. Either edit each product’s Search engine listing, or fill the SEO description column and import the file, following Shopify’s CSV guide. Move a shipping note or size chart line out of the first paragraph of the description itself, so the fallback no longer repeats it.

Write a description that says what the page is

A good product description for search is a plain sentence, not a list of keywords:

  • Say what it is first: the product type, the material, the size or fit.
  • Add the one detail that sets it apart: who it is for, what it goes with, where it was made.
  • Keep it under about 160 characters, so it is not cut off.
  • Write each one for its own product. Two sizes of the same shirt can share wording; two different products should not.

What stays with you

  • Duplicates across pages. The scan checks each page on its own, so a repeated description needs the export above.
  • Items with too little text. A product with one line of description gets no written description from the app, because there is nothing true to write it from.
  • The home page, the blog index and policy pages, whose descriptions are set elsewhere in Shopify.
  • Whether Google shows your description at all. Google may still write its own snippet from the page when that answers a search better.
